Faces and Places Photo Contest
2021
We held a two-part photo contest this year in an endeavor to engage and involve our scholars, and to collect photographs highlighting our scholars for our website and annual report.
The golf course employees who receive McDonough scholarships are THE reason McDonough exists. They are the beneficiaries of the money we raise from golf clubs and associations, individuals, and our fundraising efforts. We would like our donors to have a better view of those who benefit from their generosity.
Part 1
Part 1 took place over the summer. We asked our scholars to submit photos of themselves in their work environment, as well as sending us landscape photos of the course where they’re employed.
We received a number of really great entries, but the following three photos received the most votes for Part 1 of The Faces and Places Photo Contest:
First Place: $100
Abigail Conrad
University of Hartford – 2022
Derryfield Country Club
Abby is the Executive Director of HuskyTHON. The non-profit organization is responsible for leading over 3,000 students in its effort to end childhood illness. HuskyTHON raises over $1 million annually for Connecticut Children’s, a free-standing children’s hospital that serves each and every child who walks through their doors, regardless of their ability to pay for their life-saving treatments. HuskyTHON continuously provides support so that this incredible hospital can continue to serve everyone!
Second Place: $75
Christopher DeYoung

Apple Hill Golf Course
Chris’s day on the maintenance/ grounds crew at Apple Hill Golf Course starts at 4AM, getting the course ready for the day of play.

Concord Country Club
Ripken works on the grounds crew at Concord Country Club. His passion for the job has led him to pursue his degree in turf management at University of Massachusetts – Amherst.
Part 2
Part 2 of the contest took place in the Fall. To display the true essence of our McDonough scholars in their school environments we asked for photo submissions of them in class, on campus, competing in their Fall Sport, or working at a job they may hold in addition to their studies.
The following three photos received the most votes for Part 2 of the contest:

Special Recognition for Marketing Materials Selections
A redesign of our business cards/club promotional posters has taken place. Our graphic artist selected additional photos submitted by Ripken Kimball for use in the designs. Ripken received $100 in prize money for his photo submissions. Be on the lookout for his photos when our printed materials are published over the next few months! And a photo of him, hard at work at Concord Country Club, is on the landing page of the website.
McDonough thanks all the scholars who submitted photos for inclusion on our website and in our Annual Report! It’s so important for our donors to have a visual of the impact their contributions make in our scholars’ lives. We will be repeating the contest next Summer and Fall and hope to get fresh material for updates to our website!
